ant-drought

To date, the most common species we encounter in the Gauteng area has been the infamous Argentine ant, or Linepithema humile (formerly Iridomyrmex humilis). This ant in native to northern Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and southern Brazil, but has since been established any various Mediterranean areas an invasive species.Having been unintentionally introduced by humans through travel and trade, this species can be found as far abroad as South Africa, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Europe, Hawaii, the United States even as remotely as Easter Island.

Through the years we have experienced an increase in the population of this species in southern Africa, mostly due to the severe lack of rain in the region. These ants invade homes in search of water and nourishment lacking in the dry ground. The extensive drought and struggle to control the resultant ant infestation are not isolated to southern Africa, as it has been tackled in the US and various countries around the world. Studies undertaken at the University of California discovered the existence of various ‘super colonies’ which have been invading suburbs in San Francisco for the last 50 years. Further investigation has revealed that the ants took to invading the homes due to the extensive dry season, and drought which caused a severe lack of water and nutrients in the ground, forcing the ants to search elsewhere for the water and nutrients they need to survive. The study also debunked prior theories that pest control and other non-environmental factors were to blame.

In the Gauteng, there has been a marked increase in ant activity in various areas. Research and observation have shown that the increase is directly linked to the diminished rainfall experienced throughout Gauteng and southern Africa. Nature has a way of keeping itself in check, and this is also true when it comes to ants. During good rain seasons, the rainfall floods the nests destroying a portion of the ant eggs, and stemming the growth of colonies. When rain is sparse as it has been in recent years, there is no natural system in place to curb the inflation of the ant population.

Argentine Ant Social System

Like workers in many other ant species, Argentine ant workers are unable to lay reproductive eggs but can direct the development of eggs into reproductive females; the production of males appears to be controlled by the amount of food available to the larvae. Argentine ant colonies almost invariably have many reproductive queens, as many as eight for every 1,000 workers. The queens seldom or never disperse in winged form. Instead, colonies reproduce by budding off into new units. As few as ten workers and a single queen can establish a new colony.

Ant Control

The key to the successful control of invasive ants is a marriage of good housekeeping and an effective control program. To ensure that your efforts are not in vain, do not slack in either. Xpest Pest Control employs various simple and effective measures to protect your home again invasive ants.

Perimeter Treatment

Any treatment to the perimeter of the premises is a very effective short-term knockdown aiming to prevent the ants from entering your premises in the first place. It is impossible for us to eradicate the source of the problem under the ground, so we just offer a temporary solution to a bigger problem.

Residual Treatment

Combined with a perimeter spray to outside walls we also treat inside by means of a residual spray applied to problem areas. The insecticidal spray treatment leaves a residual of active ingredient behind and this can cause the ants to be stimulated in the process of poisoning. So please do not worry, the ant activity should decrease after about a week.

Ant Bait Treatment

We can also apply revolutionary ant bait gels and granules in strategic places inside. These environmentally friendly, non-toxic and odorless ant gels and granules are a food source that is taken by the ants back down into the nests and kills from within. For best results, it does need to be re-applied, and follow-up visits are necessary.

Garden & Lawn Treatment

Our garden & lawn treatments are also very effective in the short term. As this treatment involves applying a water soluble chemical outside, and we cannot control the weather patterns, unfortunately, we cannot offer any guarantee. Rain washes the chemical away and the UV of the sun also breaks down the active ingredient. Recommended for dry winter months.
