According to a study published in the 2014 International Journal of Scientific and Research Publications, cinnamon essential oil yields positive results in both repellency and insecticidal activity. Cinnamon is very effective as an ant repellent as it smell discourages ants from entering any area in which the scent of Cinnamon can be smelt.

How do I use the Cinnamon Trick?

  1. Mix one quarter to one half teaspoon into a cup of water
  2. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture
  3. Wipe down any area you suspect to be used by ants
  4. Repeat once a day until all ants are gone
  5. (optional) You can also place ground Cinnamon and whole Garlic cloves near any holes through which ants may enter your home.

Note: Use the cinnamon oil spray strategically in places of ant infestation only. Cinnamon smells nice in a meal, not so much when it’s all over your home.


The strong scent of White Vinegar overpowers the ants ability to smell anything else. Ants navigate by scent trail. You may have notice how ants tend to all follow specific paths, this is because a scent trail has been laid by the plucky pioneer who found his way into your home. The overwhelming scent of White Vinegar inhibits the ants ability to smell this scent trail and causes the ant to get lost and confused.

How do I use the White Vinegar Trick?

  1. Mix equal parts of water and White Vinegar
  2. Pour the solution into a spray bottle
  3. Add a few drops of essential oil and shake the bottle well, to insure the ingredients are thoroughly mixed
  4. Spray all baseboards and possible entry points with the solutions, do not douse it, simply ensure that a fine layer of the solutions can be seen
  5. After an hour you can wipe up the ants with a damp paper towel and throw them away
  6. Use the White Vinegar solution to wipe down floors, windowsills, and countertops
  7. Repeat this process daily until the ants are completely gone

Note: Depending on the size of the colony, you may have to wipe daily for several days, but be assured they will all be gone eventually


Lemon Juice odour is very strong and tends to deter ants, as it acidic properties inhibit the ants ability to find their scent trails, as in the case of White Vinegar.

How do I use the Lemon Juice Trick?

  1. Rub Lemon Juice on all door thresholds and windowsills in the home. Also look for other possible points of entry the ants may likely make use of
  2. Put drops of Lemon essential oils into cotton balls and leave the cotton balls in affected cupboard spaces
  3. Scatter thin slices of lemon peel sparingly around outdoor entrances
  4. Repeat until the infestation has been eradicated


When comes to naturally occurring insect repellents, Peppermint is king. The scent of Peppermint is disruptive to the natural lifestyle of the common ant, in that its scent over powers the ants ability to detect food sources, causing ants to to avoid it altogether.

How do I use the Peppermint Trick?

  1. Mix 10 drops of Peppermint essential oil in to a cup of water
  2. With a spray bottle, spray the mixture onto all the surfaces where ant activity is present
  3. Repeat this process twice daily until the ant infestation has been eradicated
  4. In addition, sprinkle dried Peppermint leaves around your outdoor entrances, and garbage areas to repel ants

Note: You can even grow Peppermint plants in your kitchen harder, should you have one


Ants have a strong dislike for the taste of cucumber. While normal cucumbers will work fine, your best bet is to use bitter cucumbers.

How do I use the Cucumber Peel Trick

  1. Peel a cucumber
  2. Place pieces of the peel in all the areas where you have seen recent ant activity.
  3. Replace the peels with fresh ones daily.
  4. Repeat the process until the ant infestation has been eradicated

Note: If you are a big fan of cucumbers, try not to eat all the slices whilst distributing them


The potent nature of cayenne pepper destroys all chemical signals that ants rely heavily upon to navigate toward food, their nest and other places. Without a proper signal, ants will not able to survive and will thus look for new places to go.

How do I use the Cayenne Pepper Trick?

  1. Sprinkle Cayenne Pepper powder in areas where you have seen ant activity, as well as around any visible holes which may serve as entry points for the insect invaders.
  2. Mix equal amounts of cayenne pepper and turmeric powder. Sprinkle this mixture across the access points to make an unpleasant barrier for ants.


Dish Soap is a very effective ant and insect repellent. When the ants come into contact with the concoction, they will suffocate and die.

How do I use the Soap Dish Trick?

  1. Mix a teaspoon of Liquid Dish Soap and Baking Soda into a cup of water

The most powerful method of preventing ant infestation is still the Clean Home Trick. By taking extra care to keep your home as clean as possible, you go a long way to avoid ant infestations.

  1. Keep your floors, countertops and cabinets clean and free of clutter
  2. Keep all food containers tightly sealed, especially those used for storing sugar, honey, syrup and other sticky sweet foodstuffs
  3. Do not delay in cleaning up any spills. Always clean up straight away
  4. Ensure that all food left out in the kitchen is properly covered
  5. Place food bowls in dishes of water to prevent ants reaching and soiling food
  6. Clean windowsills regularly
  7. Never ever leave dirty dishes in the sink
  8. Do not leave kitchen surfaces damp or wet
  9. Make sure that your garbage is properly sealed
  10. Seal any cracks and crevices (no matter how small) with caulk or petroleum jelly (vaseline)
